You normally wouldn’t expect much from a smartphone for Rs 4,199, but Lava’s A59 tells us that we might be wrong. Purely in terms of hardware, there’s nothing much to write home about. You get a 5MP rear camera with LED flash, a VGA front camera with LED flash, a 4.5 inch TFT display at 800×480, 512MB of RAM, a 1.2GHz quad-core processor and a measly 4GB of onboard storage. You can expand that to 32GB via a microSD card however. The battery capacity is rated at 1730mAh and the device only supports microUSB 2.0.
The hardware isn’t great, but is par for the course at this price point. It’s the features that seem to be the USP of the phone though. For example, you get a separate LED flash unit for the front camera, picture-in-picture mode for video playback, gesture controls for music and an interesting feature called Smart Screenshot that will take screenshots of an entire chat window (including the stuff you can’t see). The same applies to screenshots of websites as well.
