Kerala temple withdraws women’s dress code order

The dress code was changed as per the direction from the high court, which acted upon a petition filed by a woman devotee, Riya Raj.Following protests from Hindu organisations and devotees, the Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple on Wednesday withdrew the order allowing women devotees to wear churidars or salwars. On Tuesday, the temple executive officer had changed the dress code, which had stipulated that a woman has to wear a dhoti over churidar or any other garment to enter the temple. The dress code was changed as per the direction from the high court, which acted upon a petition filed by a woman devotee, Riya Raj.On Wednesday morning, some women devotees entered the temple wearing churidar but protests forced withdrawal of the order. Members of the Kerala Brahmin Sabha blocked the road leading to the temple. They also met the district judge, who heads the temple administrative panel. Subsequently, the administrative panel decided to keep the dress code reform in abeyance.
