The incident occurred at about 1:30 am. The victim has been identified as Punnasseri Nazeer, a resident of Mangada in Malappuram district.
According to the police, Nazeer was found in the house of a 32-year-old woman, whose husband is employed in West Asia. The woman’s brothers-in-law were allegedly among the assailants. While police said they have identified the accused, no one has been detained yet.
Giving details about the incident, police said the woman’s house is near the houses of her husband’s brothers and other relatives.
“The woman’s brother-in-law heard a man’s voice from inside her house. He alerted his other brothers and male relatives living in the area. Seven of them went to her house and asked her to open the door. When she was reluctant to do so, they broke open the door and stormed inside, where they found Nazeer, a farm worker whose house is about one kilometre away,” said a police official.
According to the police, the attackers used wooden sticks to beat up Nazeer.
“The attack continued for about an hour. As the attackers were the woman’s relatives, no one intervened. About an hour later, Nazeer’s brother, Nawas, reached the spot after being informed of the incident,” said the official.
“I pleaded with them to allow me to take Nazeer to hospital. They were not even willing to give him water,” Nawas told mediapersons.
Police said Nazeer remained at the house for about one-and-a-half hours. He was later shifted to a hospital where he died.
