Both houses of the Parliament were adjourned on Friday as MPs demanded action against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Bhagwant Mann for posting a video of the parliament on social media, potentially compromising the building’s security.
A Lok Sabha MP, Mann uploaded a video clip of his journey from his residence to the interiors of Parliament House, including going past the various security pickets, an action that is a considerable breach of security. The lower house was adjourned till Monday, with Speaker Sumitra Mahajan summoning the MP.
“Thirteen people have laid down their lives for security of Parliament once. I know the matter is a serious one and I understand that appropriate action must be taken. I will see to it,” she said. In the Rajya Sabha, ruling BJP members forced an adjournment till noon demanding action against Mann.
Deputy chairman PJ Kurien noted that the issue was grave and said the government had to take appropriate legal action.
However, if members wanted a discussion on the issue, an appropriate resolution has to be brought, he said.
Minister of State for parliamentary affairs, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, also sought action against Mann under the National Security Act as he had exposed the building’s security apparatus to terrorists.
By putting the video on security checks, positioning of security personnel and layout of Parliament House complex on social media site, Mann was helping terrorist succeed in their nefarious designs, Naqvi claimed.
The Congress and CPI-M used the matter to also target the BJP, demanding to know what action the government was taking and what was stopping it from pressing the issue in the Lok Sabha, where the BJP has absolute majority.
However, Kurien noted that as Mann was a member of the other House, only the Lok Sabha Speaker could take action against him.
