Heena Sidhu leads shooters’ flop show on Day 2:Rio 2016

There were a lot of high hopes from India’s shooting contingent of 12 ever since they landed here in Rio. But the first two days have proved to be a complete disaster for India as Heena Sidhu crashed out of the 10m Air Pistol women’s qualification. In the men’s Trap shooting event also, India were dealt with blows as Kynan Chenai (19th) and Manavjit Sandhu (17th) finished the first day of qualifiers way behind the top six.Having been termed as favourite to get at least a medal from her event, Heena never looked to be in the fray before finishing 14th in the field of 44 shooters.Russian Vitalina Batsarashkina and Ekaterina Korshunova secured the top two positions while Greek shooter Anna Kokarakaki finished third scoring 387 with 12 inner 10s.The 26-year-old silver medallist at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games from India shot an overall 380, which included 13x (inner 10s). Russian Vitalina Batsarashkina topped the qualification round with a score of 390 points, including 14x.Though Heena still has 25m Pistol event scheduled for August 9 but that’s not her pet event.Heena struck the wrong note right in the beginning as she accumulated 94 points to drop down to 29th position after the second series. It was the third which brought her back into top 20 before again losing momentum towards the end to finish with 96 cumulative points. In the fourth series, Heena on 25th, again failed to put up a good show shooting 9 and 10 in her first two shots before failing to hit another 10. The 9, 10 and 10 at the end were not too helpful to revive her hopes.Though, Heena chose to slip out of venue after her failure but her husband and team’s manager Ronak Pandit refused to offer any excuses. “We got everything that we wanted including mental trainers, so there is no scope for any complaint. The idea now is to prepare for the 2020 Olympics now. We have four years and we should start now instead of three-four months before the Olympics like we did this time,” he said after the event.”Everything is not over. We will concentrate on our next event 25m air pistol on Tuesday. We came here to win a medal and we did not in the first event. That is sad. But then as a player, one has to set another target and work towards it. Take this experience to the next Olympics,” added Ronak.
