Taking a lenient view of a sexual harassment incident has landed the Faridkot police in trouble. To protest against the “negligent” attitude of the police, the Health Department employees observed a strike today.The teenaged victim is a daughter of an employee of the Health Department. Following a protest rally and dharna by department employees, the Faridkot Deputy Commissioner has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.Bolstered by “inaction” on part of the police, the accused attacked the girl’s father for lodging a complaint against them, the protesters alleged.Yesterday, department employees went to meet Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal while he was on a visit to the town, but the police did not allow them to meet him. The police misbehaved with many women employees, protesters alleged.Faridkot unit PCMS president Dr Chander Shekhar said a teenage daughter of a Health Department employee was being stalked and sexually harassed by Gurinder Singh for the past many days.

Three days ago, the girl’s father lodged a complaint with the Kotkapura Sadar police, but no action was initiated against him.The next day, the accused reached the Faridkot Civil Hospital and assaulted the girl’s father. However, the department employees present in the hospital nabbed the culprit and handed him over to the Faridkot police. Taking a lenient view of the incident, the police granted bail to the accused after a warning.Following a protest yesterday, the Kotkapura police registered a case under Sections 354 and 354A of the IPC and Sections 7 and 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act.Faridkot city SHO Surjit Singh said the police acted as per law and the accused was released on a surety bond after a warning. DC Malwinder Singh Jaggi this evening deputed the SDM, Faridkot, to conduct an inquiry into the incident.
