Happiness comes in small packages

Miracles can happen through phone calls. I realized this two years back. On a lazy Sunday afternoon, I got a call from my mom, informing me that my sister had just delivered twins. With work and other commitments I couldn’t set off immediately to visit my sister and the babies. I started after a day and my mind was full of thoughts of babies crying away to glory, sleepless nights, napkins strewn all across, but how wrong was I, I only realized this when I saw the miracles with my own eyes.

The moment I saw the babies, all my preset notions about them vanished in thin air and I couldn’t stop smiling. The thought of that moment makes me want to revisit the day all over again. Soon, the duo became the most important part of our lives and quite obviously, now everything in our life revolves around them. Be it the eating time, phone calls, holidays, in shot – every single thing.

What excites me the most is how babies teach us new things every single day and make us unlearn a lot more. A few months back, when my nephew fell sick, my two-year-old niece spent her entire day patting him to sleep. How often do we adults do that? When was the last time we bothered to take a day off to comfort our loved ones? Then comes the not- to-be- missed baby kisses – every time someone pretends to get angry with these little ones, they kiss and makeup and those innocent pecks are enough to make us forget everything. It only makes me wish that the whole world was like that. Most of the world’s problems can be solved with an innocent smile or a simple hand shake, but the only problem is that everybody wants the other person to solve the problem for them.

Well, that’s not all, babies teach us a lot more. Of late, I have started paying attention to sound of the cool breeze, the dance of the rain, the radiance of the Sun, thanks to these attentive toddlers and yes, world seems to be a beautiful place to live in.

We often think that to be happy we need big things – a fat pay cheque, a big car, a huge apartment. But, the truth is that all we need is a baby’s smile, a small hug, a warm touch and a kiss. In fact, these are the things we often tend to ignore despite knowing the fact that these are way bigger than all other things in life.

The way these little ones born in my family have changed my outlook towards life makes me believe that the world still exists only because of the innocence of these small wonders, born in every house, who only know how to fill our lives with sheer joy.

Try catching the smile of a baby today and you will realize that happiness comes in small packages.
