Handwara attacks: NIA team set up to begin probe from today


A team of 10-12 members has been set up to investigate the militant attack on the army camp on Thursday.A day after four militants who tried to infiltrate the International Border from PoK had been gunned down by security forces in the Langate area of Handwara in north Kashmir, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has set up a 10-12 member team to begin probe into the infiltration bid on Friday.
Security forces on Thursday had foiled three infiltration bids along the LoC – two in Naugam and one in Rampur. Army had also tightened surveillance in the area in a bid to keep a check on militant movement. In the meantime, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday will also chair a meeting with four states bordering Pakistan to discuss the sealing of the Indo-Pak border following the Handwara attacks. He will also meet with top BSF officials and jawans during his two-day visit to Jaisalmer, where the meeting is set to take place.National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Wednesday had briefed the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) that Pakistani army had mobilised about 100 terrorists across the LoC to push them into India to carry out attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials said the militants fired on the sentry posts of the 30 RR camp at Langate around 5 am but were engaged by soldiers guarding the camp. Failing to sneak into the camp, the militants tried to escape but were intercepted by the Army’s Quick Reaction Team. The militants were killed after a gunbattle.
General Officer Commanding of Northern Command, Lt Gen D S Hooda, on Thursday visited Uri where one of the infiltrations was foiled and reviewed security measures with local formation commanders. He was accompanied by 15 Corps Commander Lt Gen Satish Dua.
Ever since the Indian Army on September 29 conducted the surgical strikes along the LoC, Pakistan have reportedly resorted to unprovoked firing along the Indian side at regular intervals.
