Dazed Magazine welcomes its 25th anniversary this year and to celebrate, co-founder and photographer Rankin and Katie Grand, the indie publication’s very first fashion director, joined forces to shoot and style cover star Gigi Hadid. Dazed dubs Hadid “America’s sweetheart,” which could explain the cover’s cute red color scheme.
This marks just the first of a total of nine separate covers. But it’s Hadid who has the biggest spotlight for the special issue, translating to a whopping 18-page (!) feature story and an interview with Moss’s 13-year-old daughter, Lila Moss Hack, a self-proclaimed Hadid fan.
Alongside Lila’s best friend Stella Jones, the two girls pick Hadid’s brain on boys, body confidence and staying true to yourself. “I think that more than teaching what body types are correct, it’s important to teach that we are putting models out there who are confident in their bodies,” Hadid says during the interview. “I think that’s where we should start: teaching models to put out a body image that they are happy and comfortable with, so that girls who relate to them know it’s coming from a good place.”
In addition to an editorial spread and interview, Rankin also created a fashion film in which Hadid ransacks the Dazed HQ in London. (It’s a symbolic send-off: After 22 years, the publication’s team plan to move offices.) Dressed in a number of fall designer looks, Hadid kicks over trash cans, destroys a laptop, throws papers and sets off a fire extinguisher. In between all the mayhem, there’s a cameo from her boyfriend Zayn Malik, too: Hadid tags his Dazed cover by spray-painting a heart around it. Aw.
