Lovejit and another prisoner, Jaskaran Singh, were brought from the Kapurthala jail to a local court for a hearing. A team of the Jalandhar rural police, comprising Satnam Singh, Joginder Singh, Pargat Singh and Simarjit Singh, was accompanying them.After the hearing, the cops took them to a dhaba near Hartej Hospital for lunch. When they opened the handcuffs of the accused, Lovejit used the spray to flee from the spot. The spray was reportedly provided by a youth who had come to meet him during the hearing. The policemen and Jaskaran suffered acute pain in the eyes. Witnesses informed the police chowki on the court premises, following which the injured were rushed to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital.Police Commissioner Amar Singh Chahal said the investigation had revealed negligence on the part of the police team. The Civil Lines police registered a case under sections 223, 224 and 225 of the IPC against the prisoners and the cops. Chahal said police teams had been formed and raids were being conducted to nab the absconding criminal.Lovejit, whose original name is Sajan Kalayan, is wanted in cases of attempt to murder, robbery and under the NDPS Act, said Sukhwinder Singh Randhawa, SHO, Civil Lines police station.
