With the arrest of 10 persons, the district police today claimed to have busted two gangs of criminals — blackmailers and ATM thieves.The ATM thieves were allegedly involved in seven unsuccessful attempts in Sangrur and Patiala districts whereas the gang of blackmailers was allegedly involved in luring men through a woman to blackmail them by way of shooting a video in objectionable positions.The police claimed to have seized two pistols along with nine cartridges, four motorcycles, two scooters, a sword, an iron rod etc from the possession of the ATM thieves.Pritpal Singh Thind, Senior Superintendent of Police, Sangrur, said here today that in the blackmailing case, the Dirba police had arrested five persons — Rubi Rani, Kulwinder Singh alias Kala (gang leader), Happy Singh, Pankaj Kumar and Basant. He said the police also seized a car from them.The SSP said the woman lured men while her accomplices shot the video to blackmail them. They had trapped a grandson of an arhtiya from Dirba and had demanded Rs 70 lakh from him. The gang had already received Rs 1 lakh from the arhtiya. The SSP said the police had recovered the money.The SSP said that in the ATM theft cases, the Bhawanigarh police had arrested five persons Kulwinder Kaur (gang leader), Kuldip Singh, Raman, Amritpal Singh and Gulab Singh while two of their accomplices, Vaisakh and Lachhman, were absconding.The SSP said the gang had made seven bids to loot ATMs in Mallewal (Patiala), Balial (Bhawanigarh), Khanpur (Ahmedgarh), Gharachon (near Bhawanigarh), Lalochhi (Patiala) and Dhadogal (Dhuri). He said whenever they tried to commit the crime, someone appeared on the scene due to which they had to abandon their operation.
