Freedom 251 smartphone maker launches Docoss X1

Now that the dust over Ringing Bells and its Freedom 251 smartphone has settled, it’s time for a new smartphone (or scam) to take its place. Turns out there’s a company called Docoss Multimedia Private Limited in Durgapura, Jaipur, that has now put up for pre-order its own version of an affordable smartphone for the masses. They’ve called it the X1. Like the Freedom 251, it is the price that shakes things up. What’s the price? Rs 888.

Advertised in a newspaper ad, buyers can own a Docoss X1 that features 4-inch IPS display, a 1.3GHz dual-core Cortex A7 chipset, 1GB RAM and 4GB of internal memory (expandable to 32GB) for little under Rs 1,000. This dual-SIM wonder also packs in 3G bands and you get a 2.0MP camera on the back and 0.3MP (VGA) unit on the front.

The software however still seems stuck at Android 4.4 KitKat. As an added bonus you also get a one year warranty!

The design of the smartphone seems to incorporate an all plastic build and you can order one today at (which doesn’t seem to open). Oddly the domain (according to our findings) was registered just a few hours ago (April 27, 0842 GMT).

As much as we would like to believe that this smartphone exists, lessons learnt from the Freedom 251 fiasco tell us to look the other way. We tried calling the customer care numbers (all fifteen of them) just to get a busy tone. No luck there either.

Still, it is up for pre-order, with bookings now open until April 29 at 10:00PM (provided you can get the website to load). More assuring is the shipping date (unlike Freedom 251) that is scheduled for as early as May 2. And if you think you don’t have the time, Docoss makes life easier by letting you book an X1 via SMS as well. It’s just that we find it creepy when we have to give out our name, address and pin code and reveal our mobile numbers to what could very well be a phishing scam.
