Four teenage boys of Ferozepur drowned when they went to take a bath in Gang Canal near Bareke village, around 11 km from the district headquarters, this afternoon.Eight boys — Vishal (18), Prince (18), Love (17), Ishtbir Singh (17), Paras (18), Dev Kumar (12), Ashish (16) and Abhi (12) — had gone to the National Martyrs Memorial at Hussainiwala today. Sources said when they were returning, they decided to take a bath at the canal due to the scorching heat.Vishal, Prince, Love and Isthbir jumped into the canal despite the fact that they did not know swimming. Within no time, they drowned. Hearing the shrieks, farmers Baldev Singh and Gurdev Singh who were working nearby rushed to help the boys but in vain.Later, the parents were informed about the incident.

Deputy Commissioner DPS Kharbanda and SSP Manminder Singh too rushed to the spot and supervised the operation to take out the bodies.Eyewitnesses said though the water current was not too strong, the boys perhaps could not come out as the water was mucky.Heart-rending scenes were witnessed in Shanti Nagar and Burt Road localities, where the boys lived. Ishtbir’s grandfather Jagir Singh said, “My grandson was in a cheerful mood when he had left. We were discussing his future plans.

He promised me that he would come back early and then we would have fun.”Sources said some of the boys had not informed their parents about their plan. Former BJP chief Kamal Sharma along with senior SAD-BJP leaders also reached the spot and later went to the residence of the deceased boys to express condolences with family members. As most of the deceased belonged to poor families, the administration gave their families Rs 10,000 each for cremation.
