Ahead of Punjab assembly polls, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has netted an ace striker. Former Indian women hockey captain, Rajbir Kaur on Thursday joined AAP expressing regret over the state of “deteriorating hockey affairs” in Punjab.Rajbir, an Arjuna awardee, is the only Indian woman hockey player who represented India for four consecutive Asian games in 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994.Her induction into the AAP comes at a time when Olympian and former hockey captain, Pargat Singh, a sitting Jalandhar Cantonment MLA, is unhappy with Shiromani Akali Dal’s top leadership over setting up of solid waste management plant in Jalandhar. Pargat had refused to accept the post of chief parliamentary secretary in April following an attempt by the state government to placate him. Both Rajbir and Pargat come from Jalandhar. AAP has recently had a slew of sportsmen inducted into the party, including former international basketball player Sajjan Cheema and Olympian wrestler Kartar Singh.Welcoming Rajbir, AAP’s Punjab in-charge Sanjay Singh said, “People who had made an impression in their fields are joining AAP in the hope of changing the system which is full of faults.”
