Detectives from the Gold Stealing Detection Unit have charged a man with stealing more than $75,000 worth of coins and gold bars from the Perth Mint. Police allege the offences occurred during the 27-year-old man’s short employment as a contractor at the mint.

He was charged with stealing as a servant after a joint investigation involving the gold stealing unit and the Perth Mint.

Further charges were expected to be laid in regards to other offences, police said.

The Carramar man is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on June 24.

The Perth Mint issued a statement saying it had sophisticated security measures in place to detect any breaches.

It said the alleged theft was an isolated incident and no customers’ “precious metals” were affected.
