Charanjit Singh Channi, Former Congress MP plays the caste card

Playing the caste card, Charanjit Singh Channi, former Congress MP and prominent leader of the Saini community, today served an ultimatum on the party demanding adequate representation in the distribution of ticket. He said if not given adequate representation, the option of opting for other party would be open before the community leaders. He added that he would not accept single ticket for himself. The community could also field its own candidates, said the former MP.Incidentally, Congress MLA from Nawanshahr Guriqbal Kaur, owing allegiance to the Capt Amarinder Singh camp, is wife of his cousin late Parkash Singh.

“I am not against my party. I have already conveyed my concern to senior leaders in the All India Congress Committee,” he said.To assert their demand, the Saini Vikas Manch after re-grouping various factions announced a mass rally at Nawanshahr on May 14, followed by Patiala, Tanda and Ropar. “The community has 10 per cent vote bank and we want to convey the same to the political parties. The government has been denying us the OBC status despite deciding in the Cabinet,” said Tarsem Singh Saini, chairman of the manch.
