“Twenty one people have died so far in the liquor tragedy in Etah,” District Magistrate Ajay Yadav said. In Farukhabad, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Kayamganj ,Ajit Kumar, said that three persons who had consumed liquor in Etah died in the district, taking the toll to 25. More than two dozen people are still undergoing treatment at various hospitals, including Saifai Medical college in Etawah.District Magistrate (DM) Etah, Ajay Yadav, told that the death toll had risen to 22 by Sunday evening. Many patients were referred to Saifai Medical college as they were in critical condition.
“A search operation is going on at Tapua, Lohari Darwaza and Aliganj to find out if people have stock of the illicit liquor which has claimed so many lives.
Police and administrative officials are making all possible efforts to locate and destroy the spurious liquor,” added the DM. Meanwhile, the main accused in the hooch tragedy, Sripal, was arrested in Nayagaon on Saturday night.
Expressing grief over the incident, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi said in his tweet, “My deepest condolences to the families of the victims of this tragedy,” “V.sad to learn that many ppl have lost their lives in Etah, UP because of consuming spurious liquor.Those responsible must be brought to book,” he said in another tweet.
The incident took place in Jouhari Darwaza, under the Aliganj circle in Etah, which is known for manufacturing and selling hooch across UP, Rajasthan and Haryana.The victims were daily wage labourers who had consumed liquor late Friday night.
