Joe Root and Chris Woakes will resume from where they left yesterday. Mohammad Amir will bowl at them first up. Two slips and a gully in place. Let’s play!

A brilliant performance by Root on Day 1 gave the English innings a burst of vitality and Cook’s ton was the push that the hosts needed. Pakistan’s side did not show the same spark in their bowling and failed to capitalize on their chances. The first session will prove critical for both sides. It remains to be seen if Root can continue his fantastic innings partnered by nightwatchman Chris Woakes. Pakistan too can build upon the momentum they created towards the end of Day 1. Stay tuned for another great day of Test cricket.

…Day 2, Session 1…

Day 2 will see Root still at the crease and nightwatchman Chris Woakes accompanying him. The unflappable Root, who was in sublime form today, and the remaining batsmen will look to pile on runs and put a dint into the new ball. Catch us tomorrow at 1530 IST for the next day’s action. Till then, cheers and take care!

Pakistan had several chances throughout the day, particularly with captain Cook, but they were let down by some poor fielding which must have been frustrating for Mohammad Amir in particular. Yasir Shah has failed to impress so far, his short deliveries and expensive bowling a far cry from the wicket machine he was in the 1st Test. The rest of the bowlers put in decent efforts but Rahat Ali and Amir were the only ones to pick up wickets with a brace apiece.

As the day progressed, the duo looked relaxed and picked up the run rate. The removal of Cook brought on a brief period of flux but Gary Ballance brought balance back to the game, putting up a 73-run partnership with Root who remained at the crease and has so far scored 141 runs.

What a day it’s been for the hosts! England have undoubtedly seized the day and it is all thanks to the deadly duo of Alastair Cook and Joe Root. Their 185-run second wicket partnership changed the course of the innings for the home side after they lost Hales early to Amir. Both Cook and Root continued to notch up Test tons and stabilize the innings at a crucial phase.

The umpires and players make their way onto the field. England’s opening pair will be ALASTAIR COOK and ALEX HALES. MOHAMMAD AMIR begins proceedings for Pakistan.

TOSS – England win the toss and decide to bat first. Alistair Cook confirms that Moeen Ali will remain the sole spinner and James Anderson and Ben Stokes replace Steven Finn and Jake Ball.

The Englishmen will look to answer in kind, readying themselves for the turning track. This makes sense, since the pitch seems to offer more turn and will be eminently suitable for the spinners. James Anderson and Ben Stokes’ return will be another point in the bowler’s favour and Pakistan can prepare for much stiffer resistance this time around. Stay tuned for the toss as we take you through the coverage of what looks like an exciting contest.

We take a trip to Old Trafford for the 2nd Test game of the 4-match series between England and Pakistan. The visitors have been in impeccable form in the first Test, handing the English a drubbing and have adapted well to the conditions.
