The surgeons at Amritsar Corporate Hospital were in for a shock when a patient turned up with severe abdominal pain. An ultrasound revealed a hug mass in his stomach and the doctors at first assumed it to be tumour.
But then a camera was put down into the man’s stomach which revealed a “very different kind of thing”, the chief surgeon Jatinder Malhotra said. So unusual was the sight that doctors did a CT scan of the patient to confirm what they had seen which defied their belief.
The things inside the man’s stomach were knives, pocket knives, each one about seven inches long. The doctors then took two days to chalk out a surgery plan and removed 40 knives from his stomach.
The man had developed a taste for metal and had a wild urge to consume knives. He spent about two months swallowing the knives.
The chief surgeon said the patient swallowed some knives folded, and some unfolded, and when they took the knives out some had even started rusting and were broken. The man, who is sorry to let his family down, said, “I just enjoyed its taste (of the metal) and I was addicted … how people get addicted to alcohol and other things, my situation was similar.”
Doctors say that the patient is out of danger but will to be cleared by the psychiatrists before being discharged.
