We all love sequels, especially if the sequel is a film such as Dil Chahta Hai. Farhan Akhtar’s debut was a path-breaker in its time for it was so real. Granted it dealt with people like us and their first-world problems, but it was as much about friendship, life and love.
There were no backup dancers — unless they were ironical — and there was no melodrama either. If heartbreak happened, sometimes you could deal with it with a trip to Goa, at other times, it changed your life.
Starring Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna as the three male protagonists, it stayed with the 90s kids. Probably that is why there is so much interest in its sequel, if it happens. Director Farhan Akhtar teased us with one when Dil Chahta Hai completed 15 years.
And now, he is ready to speak at length about it. Talking about his tweet saying ‘watch this space’ regarding a DCH sequel An interview, “I thought let me add something to go along with my Don 3 and Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara 2 (queries). Now, I will just keep throwing out (stories about my) sequels.
It (a sequel to DCH) is something that I would like to do. I actually mentioned this earlier this year too. It is too early to say if anything is happening or not, only time will tell. I have a lot on my mind about the sequel, but I don’t know what to say about when it is going to happen.”
Talking about making of Rock On 2 which is nearing completion, he added, “It was amazing because things were familiar. It is like if you have lived in a house on rent for three years, then moved out, but if you go back to the same place after eight years, you kind of know where everything is — from the switches to the fans.
So, the basic blueprint of the space that the film is set in remains the same. I was only trying to familiarise myself again with the same space, and the character, which had occupied me emotionally at one point.”
Hmm, won’t it make the sequel to DCH a cakewalk too?
Not just Farhan, Akshaye has also hinted that he would like to be involved with the sequel. However, he believes a sequel would only work if the entire original team would come on board.
