Navratri marks the biggest celebrations of Goddess Durga’s nine avatars, and day eight is of special significance for many devotees across the globe. Goddess Maha Gauri is worshipped today.
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Maha Gauri is the eighth form of Devi Durga and one of the most beautiful and graceful avatars of Nav Durga. Due to her pearly white complexion, she is revered with name ‘Gauri’. She denotes peace and endurance.
Story behind her white complexion
It is believed that this avatar of Parvati did hard penance to obtain Lord Shiva as her husband. Due to many years of meditation and lack of food intake, her body colour turned dark. When Lord Shiva finally accepted her devotion, he washed her body with Ganga water that made her body completely white.
B>Details:She has four arms and mounts a bull. She carries Trishul in one right hand and keeps the second right hand in Abhaya Mudra. She adorns a damaru in the one of her left hands, while the other is kept in Varada Mudra.
