In an alleged case of honour killing, a Dalelwala village resident killed his 17-year-old daughter with a shovel over her “relations” with a youth of a neighbouring village.The incident took place last night when Baljeet Singh (42) returned home from his fields, reportedly in a drunken state, he attacked his daughter Ramandeep Kaur who was sleeping with a shovel.On hearing her screams, the victim’s mother and younger daughter (12) came to her rescue, but in vain. The police claimed the accused strangulated her daughter after hitting her thrice on the head with a shovel.The accused is a marginal farmer who owns about 3.5 acres of land. He had “forcibly” got her daughter engaged to a youth in Lehra Mohabbat three months ago. Baljeet Singh was against his daughter’s alleged love affair with a youth of Korwala village.Ramandeep Kaur was a student of Manu Vatika School. She had got 80 per cent marks in the Class XII results declared yesterday.“We have arrested the accused under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. After killing his daughter, the accused fled the spot and hid in the house of one of his relatives in a nearby village. A complaint has been lodged against him by his wife Binder Kaur,” said Pritpal Singh, SHO, Boha.Dalelwala village sarpanch Sukhpal Singh said: “Baljeet Singh was annoyed over his daughter’s relations with a youth, who also belonged to the same caste but was unemployed. The victim got engaged recently and was unwilling to get married.”
