Traffic heading south on the Pacific Motorway is banked up for kilometres as emergency services work to clear the scene of an earlier accident.

Police have opened an additional lane of the motorway near Coomera but two lanes still remain closed.

The on-ramp to the motorway near Dreamworld is also closed.

Images from news helicopters show cars slowly crawling along the motorway as peak hour traffic continues to grow.

Three southbound lanes of the Pacific Motorway are closed at Coomera after a two-vehicle crash.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 3.15pm with reports that one person was still trapped in one of the vehicles.

The man was extracted by firefighters and placed in an induced coma by paramedics at the scene.

He was being transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition with significant chest injuries.

A spokesperson for Queensland Ambulance Service said another four people required treatment at the scene and had been transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

The lane closures were causing traffic to slow in the area as people began their peak-hour commute home.
