A suspicious package turned out to be a discarded backpack, say police. The investigation Friday evening had temporarily shut down Vaughan Street around the Law Courts building, from York Avenue to St. Mary Avenue. A hazmat vehicle and fire trucks were also called to the scene.

The area reopened to cars and pedestrians at about 7:30 p.m. once the backpack on the 200 block of Vaughan Street was deemed safe.

This latest scare comes after a man lit a backpack on fire in front of the Law Courts building causing a small explosion on Wednesday.

Earlier Friday, a suspicious item was found outside the Winnipeg police headquarters but it turned out to be harmless.
