A policeman was killed and three others were wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near their vehicle in Peshawar on Thursday.

The blast occurred shortly before iftar in the Garhi Sobat Khan area on the outskirts of the provincial capital.

“An IED exploded near a police mobile which was on routine patrol in Garhi Sobat Khan,” Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Operations Abbas Majid Marwat said. “Sub-Inspector Qayyum Dad was killed and three other policemen – Atlas, Junaid and Asim – were injured,” he added.

The wounded policemen were taken to Lady Reading Hospital where doctors said their condition was critical.

Meanwhile, police cordoned off the scene of the blast and launched a search operation for suspects who planted the IED. A bomb disposal unit (BDU) also inspected the site of the attack.

“At least five to six kilogrammes of high explosive was used to make the remote controlled IED.
