Former Congress MP Charanjit Channi has resigned from the party in protest against Punjab Congress leadership ignoring the backward classes. Channi, who was an MLA and then an MP, said in the recent restructuring of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), backward classes were ignored. He also alleged that Punjab Congress chief was advocating inclusion of Jats in the OBC, which was wrong and would be detrimental to those already covered under the quota.Playing the caste card he said that Jats were already lording over the state and advocacy for their inclusion in OBCs amounted to marginalizing the real OBCs further, he claimed.A few days back, Channi had also organized a gathering of Saini community in Nawanshahr and it was seen as his show of strength and a pressure building tactic to get a party ticket. He first contested as an independent in 1997 after the death of his father Dilbag Singh, who was a minster in Beant Singh government, when Congress gave ticket to his mother but he rebelled and contested as an independent and won.Later Congress took him in the party fold and in 1999, he became the Congress MP from Hoshiarpur and left Nawanshahr seat for his cousin Parkash Singh after whose death his wife Guriqbal Kaur is now an MLA and is part of the Amarinder camp. Channi contested from Hoshiarpur as BSP candidate in the 2004 general elections but lost. AfterD sometime joined Congress again.
