Leader of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Charanjit Singh Channi, along with PPCC vice-president Surinderpal Singh Sibia and Congress workers, today gheraoed the police station here.
The gherao, lasting 75 minutes, ended with the submission of a memorandum by Channi to Bhawanigarh Naib Tehsildar-cum-Duty Magistrate. They were protesting against the lathi charge by the police on agitating Dalits on May 24 at Balad Kalan village near here. The memorandum sought immediate stoppage of “atrocities” being “committed” on agitating Dalits by the police and the administration.
These agitating Dalits were protesting against the auction of 105 bighas of panchayat land (reserved for SCs) of their village, terming it as a “dummy” auction and seeking the entire 531-bigha reserved land of Balad Kalan village at low rates for all Dalits of the village for joint farming.
Earlier, the police, sensing trouble, locked the main gate of the police station from inside. Channi and other leaders climbed the boundary wall of the police station and addressed the protesters from there. The DSP talked to Channi and took the memorandum from him.
