Punjab’s Leader of Opposition Charanjit Singh Channi today refused to put his signatures on the file concerning the appointment of two Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) members, saying there was no representation of the Scheduled Caste and Backward Class communities. The Parkash Singh Badal government has recommended the names of Jagteshwar Singh and Samrendra Sharma for the PPSC. While Jagteshwar is said to be a distant relative of Cabinet Minister Bikram Singh Majithia, Sharma, the BJP’s choice, is the principal of SD College, Pathankot. Channi, a member of the  committee constituted for appointment of PPSC members, has returned the file with a dissent note, asking for a meeting to discuss the issue. His accordance is not necessary for the appointments to go through. The high-powered committee comprises the Chief Minister, Vidhan Sabha Speaker and Leader of the Opposition. Six of the seven members of the PPSC —  Hardeep Singh Grewal, Rahul Singh Sidhu, Narinder Singh Sangha, Dr Kulbir Singh Sandhu, Jaspal Kaur and Sukhwant Singh Sarao — are from the Jat Sikh community. Even the Chairman, Lt Gen TS Gill (retd) is a Jat.Channi said that he had written to Badal to appoint at least two members of the SC and BC community in the PPSC. “Otherwise, considering the population of the SCs and BCs in the state, there should be at least 50 per cent members of the PPSC from poor sections of the society,” he said.Meanwhile, Channi has also refused to sign on the recommendation made by the CM and Deputy CM for filling the two posts in the Information Commission. One of two names recommended is that of Preety Chawla, daughter of former Rajya Sabha member from Haryana Tarlochan Singh.\
