A key witness in the CBI probe into the theft of a “bir” of Guru Granth Sahib from a gurdwara at Burj Jawahar Singh Wala village was shot at by unidentified assailants this morning.Gurdev Singh, 35, was rushed to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital with a bullet injury in the head, but he was referred to DMC, Ludhiana.Gurdev Singh, a follower of Dera Sacha Sauda, was attacked at 5.30 am, minutes after he opened his grocery shop located in front of the gurdwara. Victim’s wife Sarbjit Kaur said the accused came in a car bearing a temporary number plate. “They asked for soft drinks. The moment my husband turned around, an assailant opened two rounds of fire at him. He escaped one bullet, but the other hit him in the head,” she said.Later, a five-member team of Dera Sacha Sauda arrived in the village. Gurdev Singh, the head of the team, said: “The victim has no rivalry. His father was a granthi in the village gurdwara. Since he is assisting the CBI in the probe, it prompted the culprits to kill him,” he said.Senior police officers, including DIG Ranbir Singh Khatra, visited the crime spot. The police are collecting footage from CCTV cameras installed near the spot.
