“I come from a small town called Basti in Uttar Pradesh. Even thinking of entering Bollywood is a huge deal for people there. So, it is a matter of pride for them that I am part of the industry now. My journey in Bollywood has been challenging, but it has also been a dream come true,” says singer Brijesh Shandilya, who is known for songs such as Oye Lucky Lucky Oye and Banno Tera Swagger, among others.
Brijesh says it was difficult for him to make inroads into the music industry because “it is a highly competitive place”. He is now set to release his debut solo album, which will feature old melodies. He wants to pay tribute to stalwarts such as RD Burman, Kishore Kumar, Manna De and Illayaraja, among others. “I am a big fan of old songs. The tracks and the artistes (the album features a few covers of popular old songs) on the album are really special to me,” says Brijesh, who was a reality show participant. The singer doesn’t sing frequently for Bollywood. “Things aren’t easy,” he says, adding, “I record songs practically every second day, but it is a matter of chance if the versions I sing make it to the soundtrack of a film. I’ve also been concentrating on independent music for the past few months.” He says he wants to record more independent albums, “since the time is good for indie music”. “After this album, I will start working on a single,” he says.
