Subscribers of Idea Cellular’s 3G/4G services opting for the 5GB monthly data pack will benefit the most as the country’s top two mobile operators have started offering promotional offers for their high-margin data services. The promotional offers through an indirect price cut by providing more data for the same price, comes as the operators hope to gain more new users to use internet, while retaining the existing ones to save their profitability ahead of the much-awaited launch of high-speed 4G services by Reliance Jio Infocomm. On Sunday, Bharti Airtel, the country’s largest telecommunications service provider dropped prices for its data packs by upto 67% by offering more volume for the same price, while on Monday, Idea Cellular, the country’s third-biggest operator followed suit with a similar announcement.Consumers of both Bharti and Idea will now get 5GB data instead of 3GB earlier for the same price of Rs 655 and Rs 649, respectively. The 3GB data pack has the highest discount in terms of value and more data in terms of volume, an analysis of the tariff plans of both the companies showed.Vodafone India, the country’s second-biggest operator is yet to make any announcement about any promotional offers for its data services, but currently it offers 3GB data for Rs 700.“While the price reduction in our sachet data packs was aimed at inducting more users into the world of internet; the reduction in rates of BIG Recharge packs now, is aimed at delivering significantly higher Value for Money to our regular internet users,”said Sashi Shankar, chief marketing officer, Idea Cellular.“Our consumer research studies have indicated a growing demand for affordable high volume internet packs which we are aiming to fulfil with the new offers.”For other monthly subscription packs with Bharti, the discounts or the higher volume of data begins from 40% more data, while that for Idea Cellular’s packs it starts from 33%. However, for both the operators the maximum additional data is upto 67%.Bharti and Idea, while introducing the new tariffs, have also launched starter packs for the price-sensitive pre-paid subscribers who form more than 90% of their subscription base.Bharti Airtel’s sachet packs offer between 25% to 48% extra data from prices ranging from Rs 5 with a validity for one-day and Rs 145 with a validity of 14-days. Idea Cellular too offers between 33% to 47% extra data for pricing starting from Rs 19 to Rs 145, the company’s statement showed. To be right, Idea Cellular’s new tariff tweaks are promotional offers, which means the packs may not be offered as part of standard packages later. Bharti, however, did not specify whether its move is a promotional offer, or part of standard data packs.
