Atleast 12 dead, CM announces Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia


After a Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus plunged into a deep gorge in Mandi district in the wee hours of Sunday morning, killing atleast 12 people and leaving 43 others injured, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has announced Rs 5 lakh as compensation for the kin of the deceased.
The bus which was ferrying over 55 persons was on its way to Rekong Peo, when the mishap took place near Jogindernagar in Mandi district.
Police officials reached on the spot to rescue the victims. The injured were then rushed to the nearby PGI Chandigarh, Government Medical College, Tanda (Kangra) and other hospitals.
Eight bodies have been retrieved from the wreckage of the bus by Sunday morning.
The condition of some of the injured persons was critical, according to the police.
The rescue operations are in progress with the deceased victims yet to identified. Further details are awaited.
