“On the intervening night of May 24-25, a joint search operation was undertaken by the Army and J&K Police, based on intelligence inputs regarding movement of terrorists in Watsar forest, 12 km west of Handwara. Liaquat Ali of Nagni Wadar Payeen village accompanied the search party. At 5 am on May 25, the security forces came under fire. Ali was found injured. He unfortunately succumbed to the injuries,” he said.

Ali’s family said they heard gunshots in the forest, after which the Army informed them that Ali was killed by militants. The Army has launched a probe as there are some missing links in the circumstances in which the 22-year-old was killed, they added.
