This was the second ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops in Rajouri district during less than 12 hours as earlier, Pakistani troops resorted to mortar shelling and other small arms fire in Nowshera sector on Sunday morning. Significantly, while Pakistani firing in Balakote area came after a lull of 10 days, it disturbed peace along the LoC in Nowshera sector after 11 days. Pointing out that the latest ceasefire violation in Lam area of Nowshera came at around 4 am, sources said that unprovoked firing from across the LoC continued till 7 am. The Indian troops retaliated befittingly, sources said, adding that there was no casualty or damage on the Indian side.
Ever since India carried out surgical strikes across the LoC, causing significant damage to terrorists and those shielding them, Nowshera sector has seen intense mortar shelling, automatic and other small arms fire from Pakistan side.Of all the incidents of unprovoked Pakistani mortar shelling, besides automatic and small arms fire since September 19, nearly 50 per cent of the ceasefire violations have taken place in Nowshera sector. As the area has numerous gaps between the barbed wire fence and the LoC, the Indian troops continue to be in a state of alert. “The threat is always there as the enemy cannot be trusted especially after the surgical strikes,” said a senior army official. “Apart from physical domination of the area, we have increased our vigil by adding electronic surveillance equipment on ground as well,” he added.
