Amritsar: Akali leaders tussle over ‘pace of development’

The meeting was called to discuss the problems in projects in Amritsar south assembly constituency.
A meeting on Thursday to discuss the pace of development projects in Amritsar south constituency at the Amritsar Municipal Corporation Commissioner’s office witnessed dramatic scenes as SAD spokesperson Navdeep Singh Goldy and senior deputy mayor Avtar Singh Truckanwala grappled each other to the floor.
Later, Goldy was booked under Section 295(A) for hurting the religious sentiments of Truckanwala by dislodging his turban during the fight, as deputy Commissioner Amritsar Varun Roojam and Municipal Corporation Amritsar Commissioner Sonali Giri looked on.
Goldy also snatched a gun from his own personal security officer and brandished it in the air before fleeing. While according to eyewitnesses he fled in an auto rickshaw, police claim it was a car. He was also booked under several sections of the Arms Act.
The meeting was called to discuss the problems in projects in Amritsar south assembly constituency. Goldy hopes to contest the upcoming Assembly election from this constituency, which is at present represented by suspended MLA Inderbir Singh Bolaria. SAD Urban President Gurpartap Singh Tikka, who is also hoping for a ticket from the same constituency, was also present at the meeting.
Complainant Truckanwala said, “Bikram Singh Majithia had arranged this meeting with the DC last night only. It had just begun and SAD leaders from constituency were reaching for the meeting. Goldy attacked me while I was explaining a point for the delay in the construction of a road in the constituency.”
According to a SAD councilor, who was an eyewitness to the entitre episode, Goldy and Truckanwala got into heated arguments about pace of development projects in the constituency. They were locked in a scuffle on the floor behind the DC’s chair in the meeting room. Fellow partymen intervened to separate the two men, and shoved Goldy out of the room.
Just as everybody assumed that the matter was settled, Goldy returned and went straight for Truckanwala’s turban, according to the eyewitness. Among Sikhs, this is considered a grave assault on a person’s religious sentiments.
Goldy, who has short hair and does not sport a turban, then allegedly snatched his security guard’s police rifle and started waving it in the air after coming out of the meeting room. He allegedly used abusive language against Truckanwala and other party leaders. Then he hailed an auto rickshaw and fled in it.
Amritsar police commissioner Amar Singh Chahal confirmed the FIR against Goldy. He said that Goldy left in a car and it was possible that his gunmen also left with him. Goldy had not contacted police till filing this report.
Truckanwala told he had demanded that Goldy be removed from the party.
