Injured have been rushed to Manipal hospital.Eight school children were killed and 12 persons injured, including the driver of a mini van and his school teacher wife, after a private bus collided with a school van on NH 66 in the coastal Karnataka district of Udupi on Tuesday morning.
There were a total of 18 children and three adults in the school van. Six of the eight school students dead are girls. The accident occurred around 8:00 am on NH 66 at the Mohadi Cross, near Gangolli, in Udupi.
The deceased were all students of the Don Bosco school at Gangolli. They were identified as Nikita, Ananya, Calista, Ansita, Alwita, Royston, Delvin and Clarissa.The Udupi district police said that the private bus plying on the Byndoor-Kundapur route crashed into the Maruti Omni school van a few metres away from the Don Bosco School. Three students were killed at the spot and five more died in hospital, police said. Among the students, seven were attending primary school while one was in middle school. The Gangolli police arrested the bus driver Manju and the conductor Shakeel.
“The driver of the van and his wife are out of danger. Five students are in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the Manipal hospital,” the Kundapur Circle Inspector P M Divakar said.
