Six people were injured when the compressor of an air-conditioning unit exploded near the emergency ward of a premier hospital in Varanasi on Saturday.
The explosion took place near the reception area at the Sir Sundar Lal Hospital at the Banaras Hindu University, triggering panic among visitors. The injured and those being treated at the emergency ward were immediately shifted to a trauma centre inaugurated at the university last year.
The gas from the AC unit filled the ward after the blast, prompting authorities to evacuate all thirty patients from the facility.
Medical superintendent OP Upadhyay told Hindustan Times operations at the emergency ward would be resumed after repair work is completed.
The emergency services have been temporarily shifted to another facility at the hospital, he said.
