Ontario Provincial Police have confirmed that a 51 year-old woman from the Greenstone, Ont. area is dead after a collision on Highway 11 Wednesday morning. Kimberley Vaughan was pronounced dead at the scene, police said in a media release issued Thursday.
The crash between Vaughan’s SUV and a tractor trailer closed the highway for almost 12 hours on Wednesday, before reopening around 9:15 p.m.
According to police, the SUV was travelling eastbound on the highway between Longlac and Hearst when it crossed over into oncoming traffic, and hit the driver’s side of the westbound tractor trailer.
The truck subsequently caught fire, police said, but the driver was not injured.
The crash happened 65 kilometres east of Longlac near the North Pagwachuan River.
According to police, officers, firefighters and area emergency medical services were on scene for several hours.
Police reported that the highway re-opened to one lane of traffic at about 7:25 p.m. Wednesday before fully reopening about two hours later.
The circumstances of the collision are being investigated, police said.
