A 48-year-old man is in custody after Vancouver police discovered a body at a historic building in downtown Vancouver. The building known as the Gabriola Mansion, on Davie Street in Vancouver’s West End, was cordoned off by police around 8 p.m. PT Wednesday evening. Numerous officers remained on the scene throughout the day Thursday.

Police are still working to identify the victim and determine the cause of death, according to a release from the VPD.

A 48-year-old man was arrested in connection with the death shortly before midnight on Wednesday, police said.

Gabriola Mansion was built in 1900 by B.T. Rogers, of the Rogers Sugar company. It takes its name from Gabriola Island, the source of the distinctive greenish sandstone from which it is built.

Since Rogers’ death in 1918, the building has been used from everything from apartments to restaurants but is currently vacant — awaiting conversion into apartments once again.
