The regional transport official, during their on-going ‘compulsory helmet drive’, nabbed more than 120 people who were driving their two-wheelers sans helmets. In their unique drive, officials are giving choice to violators either to buy helmet on the spot or pay fine. The second day of the drive which was conducted near police station on Aerodrome Road saw inspecting teams stopping two-wheeler riders who were not wearing helmet. They stopped around 82 people and gave them the choice to buy a helmet or pay fine. Officials also fined two-wheeler riders who had helmet but were not wearing it while riding. “We fined around 40 people who had helmet but were not using it,” said assistant regional transport officer (ARTO) Archana Mishra, who is leading the initiative taken by RTO. She added that we are going to continue the drive for coming days to make two-wheeler riders aware about their own safety. We have also invited the wholesale helmet distributors of the city to set up their sale counter near our check post points to offer genuine helmets to riders. “The checking points are open for all helmet dealers of the city,” said an official, adding that this saves us from the allegation of having any tie-up or connection with any particular helmet dealer.
