Four soldiers were injured Thursday when a military vehicle overturned on the New Jersey Turnpike. State police said the Humvee overturned in South Brunswick. Police spokesman Lawrence Peele said a woman and three men were injured in the crash.
State police said on Twitter that one woman and one man were critically injured, one man was in serious condition and another man was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center in New Brunswick. His condition wasn’t immediately known.
Peele said the female soldier suffered a severe leg injury. WABC and WNBC both reported that the woman had to have her leg amputated at the scene, but authorties could not immediately confirm the reports.
Photos from the scene show the mangled truck upside-down against a guardrail. Soldiers used a jack to lift the Humvee off the trapped passengers. One of its tires had fallen off.
The accident occurred around at 3 p.m., according to a state Department of Transportation traffic-. Police didn’t immediately say why the truck overturned,
All southbound lanes near mile marker 74.9 were closed temporarily. Lanes started to re-open around 5 p.m.
A spokesman for the Army Reserves at Fort Dix tells the injured soldiers are with Army Reserves Unit 533rd Brigade Support Battalion stationed at Fort Totten in Queens, New York.
