About 4.5 lakh families of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) and construction site workers will soon get enrolled for benefits under the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) in Punjab. Under the ESIC, there is no ceiling on the expenditure incurred on the insured person’s treatment.More than 8.5 lakh industrial workers and their families are presently enrolled under the ESIC in the state.According to sources in the Health Department, the corporation conducted a survey through its social security wing and identified around 4.5 lakh workers to be brought under the extension scheme. These include about 19,000 workers in the unorganised sector.The construction site workers have been brought under the ESIC as they are highly prone to mishaps and sickness. Earlier, they were not covered under any insurance scheme. There are six ESIC hospitals and 70 dispensaries in Punjab.According to the ESIC mandate, the insured employees and their families are provided full medical care from the day they enter insurable employment. Medical care is also provided to retired and permanently disabled insured persons and their spouses on the payment of a token annual premium of Rs 120.
