A 38-year-old man attempted to commit suicide by setting himself ablaze outside the Women Police Station in Nawanshahr today.Nearby shopkeepers managed to douse the fire and rushed him to the hospital.Nawanshahr Women Cell incharge Gurmeet Kaur said Teena of Nawanshahr had filed a complaint against her husband Manga that he was a drug addict and beat her up daily. She had also alleged that he was threatening to commit suicide.“Two times earlier, Manga did not turn up to record his statement. Today, he turned up but resorted to the act. Instead of appearing before the panel of Women Cell officials, he brought petrol in a bottle from a nearby filling station, poured it on his body and set himself afire. Shopkeepers immediately doused the flames,” she said.Manga, who sustained 10 to 15 per cent injuries on his face and neck, was initially rushed to the local Civil Hospital, from where he was referred to the PGI in Chandigarh.
