Three persons were killed and 11 others, including five Levies personnel, sustained injuries in firing at a protest rally in Sahdarra area in upper Kurram Agency, tribal sources said on Wednesday. The sources said former Senator Allama Abid al-Hussani and other local elders had organised the rally in Parachinar. The clerics from Peshawar were also invited to the event but they were reportedly stopped by the political administration at the Chappri checkpost, the entry point to Kurram Agency.

The political administration’s decision not to allow people from other areas to attend the event in Kurram Agency enraged tribesmen who staged a protest rally against the authorities in Sahdarra area.

The Kurram Levies and Frontier Corps soldiers fired teargas and baton-charged the protesting tribesmen who threw stones at the soldiers, injuring five Levies personnel identified as Sardar Hussain, Muzahir Hussain, Asif Hussain, Iqbal Hussain and Imran Ali.

The protesters claimed that three tribesmen Nisar Hussain, Syed Yahya Hussain and Syed Ali Akbar were killed and six others sustained injuries when the Levies and FC soldiers fired warning shots to disperse the protesters.

However, the officials of the political administration told reporters that the deaths and injuries were caused due to the firing by the protesters. They said the culprits had been identified and would soon be arrested. The main road remained closed for several hours while entry of vehicles to Parachinar city was banned.

The administration arrested several protesters. The main road was reopened after the protesters dispersed. A leader of Tehreek-e-Hussaini, Munir Hussain, alleged that the forces opened fire at the protesters when they were taking lunch.
