Two women have died after their car collided with a garbage truck southwest of Brisbane. Police are investigating the double fatality at Peak Crossing, near Ipswich, where the rubbish truck and car crashed at the intersection of Ipswich-Boonah Road and Mount Flinders Road on Monday morning.

The women were both declared dead at the scene, while the truck driver was treated for shock.

They are the second and third Queenslanders to have died in the past 24 hours due to traffic accidents.

An elderly pedestrian, 85, died four days after being hit by a car in north Queensland.

The woman suffered serious leg, arm and head injuries as she was struck in Bowen, south of Townsville, last Wednesday and died in hospital on Sunday night.

The 25-year-old male driver of the car was not hurt, while police have appealed for witnesses of the crash to come forward.
