3 injured in Belagavi clash; police detain 2 corporators


Three persons were injured and several vehicles damaged in a communal clash that broke out in the heart of the city late on Tuesday night. Police have taken 31 persons from both communities into custody including two corporators- Mujmil Ahamad Doni of ward No. 35 and Amtin Shaikh Ali of ward No. 37.
The situation is now under control and police have been deployed in communally sensitive Shetty Galli, Chavat Galli, Jalagar Galli and Kotwal Galli which witnessed the violence. A green flag hoisted at Shetty Galli reportedly triggered the clash. Sources said that stone throwing started at 11.30pm and continued for a few minutes.A police team led by DCP Radhika reached the spot and arrested miscreants engaged in creating disturbance. Police sources said the stone throwing started minutes after both councillors held a meeting with the locals.
Soon after the arrests, a group of women from Chavat Galli and Shetty Galli staged a protest in front of the city police commissioner’s office demanding the release of their relatives. They alleged that police had barged into their houses at midnight taking family members, who had nothing to do with the riot, into their custody.
BJP leaders including MP Suresh Angadi, former MLA Abhay Patil, advocate Anil Benake and Kiran Jadhav visited the troubled areas.
