The woman, Karamjeet Kaur, was a native of Delhi and had moved to Mumbai in February to find work as a model. She had been staying at Four Bungalows in Andheri West with her boyfriend, Jitendra Singh (24), an actor and film director, the police said. An officer at Amboli police station said that eight days ago, Kaur returned to Mumbai from Delhi, and was informed by Singh that he wanted to end their relationship.
“The couple had been having fights ever since the deceased returned from Delhi. Kaur wanted to continue the relationship and constantly pleaded with Singh to give her another chance. But Singh remained firm,” said the officer. In the early hours of Tuesday, the police said the duo was counselled by a mutual friend. “The friend advised Kaur to give up on the relationship since it wasn’t working out. But a few minutes later, when the couple got into another serious fight, a few of Singh’s friends arrived to calm them down,” said the officer.
Hours later, the police said Singh stepped out of the house and did not return till 11 pm. “All evening, Singh had been calling Kaur, but she did not answer the phone. When he reached home, he found that the door was locked. He called neighbours and the police for help and finally managed to break the door open past midnight. He found Kaur hanging from the ceiling fan with a cloth,” said the officer.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Dudhe said Kaur was rushed to Cooper Hospital where she was declared dead upon arrival. The police suspect that the fight with Singh hours earlier led Kaur to take her life. A case of accidental death has been registered at Amboli police station.
The police added they are waiting for Kaur’s family to arrive from Delhi before conducting a post-mortem. “We are investigating the reason for the suicide,” said Bharat Gaiwkad, senior inspector, Amboli police station.
