The car flipped, landing on its roof on the rail tracks.
The train’s passengers were not hurt, but the Hurstbridge line was closed for several hours.
The Metropolitan Fire Brigade’s Jack Clarke said he was amazed the pair were unharmed.
“They’ve lost control of their car coming down a hill, gone over a fence, become airborne and collided with the train approximately half way through the train,” he said.
“There was a bit of a commotion when we turned up, but all in all they’re very lucky to walk away … with their lives.” Police expect to charge the driver with conduct endangering life.
