The BSF had received intelligence reports of movements across the border.Punjab Police along with the Border Security Force (BSF) have shot down two Pakistani drug smugglers and apprehended another at Sowana border outpost in Fazilka.
Two more smugglers, reportedly from the Indian side and who were to receive a drug consignment from the Pakistani smugglers, have also been arrested. During the operation, the BSF seized 15 kg of heroin (approximate market value Rs 75 crore) along with arms and ammunition.
According to the police, packets of heroin were moved through a pipe spread out from the other side of the border towards the Indian side.SSP, Fazilka, Narinder Bhargav said this was the first time that a Pakistani smuggler had been arrested alive this year.
Providing further information about the operation, IG, BSF, Punjab Frontiers, Anil Paliwal said they had received a joint intelligence input from Punjab Police and the BSF about some movement across the border.
“Around 2 am Sunday, BSF troops spotted the intruders who started firing. The troops retaliated and, in the cross-firing, two intruders were killed and one injured,” said Paliwal.
About the arms and ammunition recovered, the IG BSF said, “Apart from recovering 15 kg heroin, we have seized 67 live rounds, two pistols, one .12 bore rifle, a mobile and two Pakistani SIM cards.”
He said this year, around 119.82 kg of heroin have been seized by the BSF apart from 9 weapons and 15 magazines. In the same period, six Pakistani smugglers have been interdicted and one apprehended while two Indian smugglers were interdicted and 9 were apprehended.
“The smugglers who have been killed have been identified as Shaukat from Suleman head and Baffa from Kanganpur village in Pakistan. The one arrested has been identified as Ramzaan from Pakistan’s Kasur district, “ said SSP Bhargav . The two others from India have been identified as Gurdeep Singh and Baljinder Singh from Taran Tarn district. “They are in custody of the Punjab police along with Ramzaan who admitted at the Fazilka Civil Hospital, “ said Bhargav.
Meanwhile, according to sources, a flag meeting was held between India and Pakistan Sunday at Sadki border in Fazilka where the matter was raised but Pakistan refused to acknowledge the bodies or the intruder caught alive as its citizens.
