Two young men were seriously hurt in an early-morning crash with a Peel police cruiser in Brampton. Peel Regional Police say two people from a civilian vehicle were taken to hospital following the crash, which occurred just before 6 a.m. Sunday in the area of Williams Pkwy. and Main St. N.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has taken over the investigation. According to a statement from the SIU, the officer was driving his “marked cruiser” south on Main St. when he collided with a Honda Civic just south of Williams Pkwy. The Civic’s 20-year-old driver and 27-year-old passenger were taken to Brampton Civic Hospital, but then transferred to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto.
Both men are from Brampton.
The officer was taken to the Brampton hospital with minor injuries.
SIU spokesman Jason Gennaro would not say if the officer had been responding to a call when the collision occurred.
The SIU, an independent body that investigates incidents between police and civilians resulting in serious injury or death, is looking to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision.
